Ever since Yeshua ascended into heaven, and even during His earthly ministry, people have looked at these signs (of which there have been plenty) and wondered if “the end” was near. It is true, you cannot look at any period of human history and not find one or more of these signs. However, the restoration of Jerusalem after almost twenty centuries of wandering stands alone. One cannot find the sign of the fulfillment of the time of the Gentiles except for the day in which we are living—and that is significant.
We have seen how the serpent Satan has struck evil in the hearts of men time and again to prevent the return of God’s chosen people to Jerusalem and the restoration of that great city. Indeed, the enemy has worked overtime to prevent this prophesied restoration of Jerusalem and return of the Jewish people to their homeland. But despite his best efforts, Israel has been restored as a nation and Jerusalem as its capital. Millions of Jewish families who were scattered to the four corners of the earth have now returned to their homeland and are building new lives there.
This is also a fulfillment of the prophecy recorded in Deuteronomy 30:2–3, “And when you and your children return to the LORD your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you” (NIV).
God will no longer be known as the God who brought the children of Israel out of Egypt, but as the God who brought His chosen people from the nations of the world back to the land of their fathers.
REBUILDING THE TEMPLE?
Another interesting development worth noting is the movement to rebuild a third temple. This topic is at the heart of a great debate among end-times teachers. Some are convinced the temple will be rebuilt before Messiah returns, while others are equally convinced that the temple will be rebuilt after His coming.
A rebuilt temple is very possible because the ninth chapter of DANIEL talks about the abomination of desolation being set up in the temple, and Yeshua mentions this same event in Matthew 24:
So when you see “the abomination of desolation,” which was spoken of through DANIEL the prophet, standing in the Holy Place (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. The one on the roof must not go down to take what is in his house, and the one in the field must not turn back to get his coat. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! Pray that your escape will not happen in winter, or on Shabbat. For then there will be great trouble, such as has not happened since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will.
—MATTHEW 24:15–21
